FOUGHT FOR CHIANG

White Russian Now In N.Z. A White Russian soldier, who fought in Marshall Chiang Kai-shek's army in 1944, reached Christchurch yesterday from Hong Kong, with his wife, four daughters and two sons, to begin a new life as a labourer in Gore. He is Mr Nikita Chernishoff. The bearded Russian and

his family, is being sponsored by the Gore Presbyterian Church. Through an interpreter, Mr Chernishoff said that he had fought bands of robbing terrorists in China’s Sinkiang region, with nothing more than a pitch fork and shotguns.

Mr Chernishoff was born in Russia. He moved with his father to Sinkiang in 1929. His parents left for Brazil in 1960, where there is a big colony of members of Old Believers. He is a member of this sect. Mr Chernishoff said that his father now lived with another son in New York. • In China, he and his family worked as collective farmers, under a system they referred to as “Christianity.” It was a system of community farming, with a common basis of religious wonship. based on the very strict Old Believers faith.
