600 LEAVE HETS
Three Nights Stranded
(N.Z. Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 3. After spending three nights stranded in alpine huts at the Top o’ the Bruce, on Mount Ruapehu, about 600 people were freed today when Bruce road was finally cleared.
In warm sunshine and perfect conditions, some of the people walked to their cars at Chateau Tongariro in the morning. Others, with their cars at the Top o’ the Bruce, had to wait till the road was open late this afternoon. The assistant chief ranger of Tongariro National Park, Mr 1. Blackmore, said tonight that it was “very quiet” on the mountain, for most people had left, either by car or by bus.
A few cars were still on the mountain. Some others were staying there and "one or two” other cars had been disabled by the cold.
