NEW SCHEME FOR SOCCER
A scheme for stream-lining the local soccer competition was submitted to the Canter bury Football Association management committee by Mr T. C. Gottermeyer last evening. Mr Gottermeyer will present his ideas to the half-yearly meeting of the C.F.A. He suggested that the O’Brien s sponsored tournament be held between the eight first division teams over one complete round at the beginning of the season.
In the meantime, the eight clubs in the second division would play a qualifying com petition from which the top two teams would join the two bot tom teams in the first division, to play a three-round competi tion for the Keys Cup.
The six clubs remaining in the first division would play for the Hurley shield, over two rounds, and the remaining six second division clubs would play for its sectional champion ship. Mr Gottermeyer's plan, he said, would save two weeks.
The City Council has given permission for English Park to be used on Sunday, August 29, provided the proceeds are de voted to the injured players fund. The match will be be tween the New Zealand under 23 XI and Canterbury. The under 23 team will have first call on Canterbury players.
Saturday's abandonment of the first division match between Western ano Rangers was the first time such a course had been taken locally, said the chairman. Mr J. Smith.
The match was abandoned after 40 minutes with Western leading, 2-0, after the captains had approached the referee (Mr E. Phillips). Mr Gottermeyer said the referee was "quite enjoying the game—hail or no hail."
