“The Press” In 1865

THE GREAT SOUTH ROAD.—The “Timaru Herald,” of the 29th inst says that during the past fortnight a considerable amount of rain has fallen, and the result in this district has been the cessation of almost all dray traffic between the town- and the districts. On each side of Timaru for two or three miles there are tolerable roads but beyond that distance they have never been formed either north or south. The traffic has been confined to a track across the country, somewhere in the I

direction in which the line of road should go. When the track, through excess of traffic, became bad, travellers diverged to the right or left and went over fresh ground, preferring to go through holes and over tussocks to taking a track in which there is a great probability of being stuck. The tracks during the past twelve months have been so much worn through the largely increased traffic, that when a little rain falls it is impossible to travel along them, and diversions have to be made.
