NEW DEAN

OF DUNEDIN Christchurch Vicar

The Rev. T. J. Raphael, vicar of St. Michael’s Church since 1963, has been appointed Dean of Dunedin and vicar of the cathedral parish He succeeds the Very Rev P. E. Sutton, who will be consecrated Bishop of Nelson on Ausrust 24.

Mr Raphael, who was educated at Christ’s College, ‘aught at Herewdrth School, Haveloek North, for two vears. He was accepted for training for the ministry in 1950 by the Community of the Resurrection at Midfield. He took his B.A, at Leeds University in 1963 and went to Mirfield to study for the priesthood. In 1955, Mr Raphael was ordained deacon, and in 1956 was ordained priest 1 1 St Paul’s Cathedral by the Bishop of London. He was then appointed curate at St Stephen's, Rochester Row, Westminster, the vicar of which, the Rev. G. Reindorp, became Bishop of Guilford. In 1960 Mr Raphae’ ’ 'as apnointed vicar of St, Mary Welling, and the Mayor’s chaplain. He married Miss A. Shepherd, of Rochdale, Lancashire, a sister at St. Thomas’s Hospital, London. They have three children.

Mr Raphael expects to take up his new appointment in October.
