Cheque For Blind A £5OO cheque from a person wishing to remain anonymous was included in donations collected in the New Plymouth canvass for Braille Week. Donations amounted to £3500, well above the target of £2OOO. Last year the figure was £2500. Also contributed was a gold wedding ring, an envelope full of tea coupons and a white stick made from shark’s vertebrae. The stick was brought to New Zealand from Hawaii 50 years ago. It will be given to the Foundation for the Blind and will eventually be used by a blind person.—(P.A.) To Visit Prison The Secretary of Justice (Mr J. L. Robson) will visit Paparua Prison this morning to discuss the recent riot with the staff. Kitchen Sinks A controversy in England at present was over what height kitchen sinks should be, said an English economist (Mrs M. S. Wheatcroft) in Christchurch yesterday. She spends her spare time with a voluntary organisation, the “Council of Scientific Management in the Home.” Research had suggested, said Mrs Wheatcroft, that kitchen sinks in Britain were too high and that for local authority housing they should be of lower average height. Mrs Wheatcroft said: “I think we reckon they should be 29in to the bottom depth that you wash up on, and 36in to the top of the draining board.” Petrol Exploded A farmhand was burned on the face when petrol he was using to light a coal range exploded at Whangamomona, Taranaki, yesterday. He is Robert Lawrence, aged 17. He was taken to Stratford Hospital. His condition last night was satisfactory.—(P.A.)
