Hospital Stills Princess Margaret Hospital has three stills, but Dr. L. C. L. Averill, chairman of the North Canterbury Hospital Board, said yesterday that he was sorry to announce that al! they distilled was water. The stills are licensed, and the board learned yesterday that the bond it had to put up for them had been reduced from £l5OO to £5OO. Wrong School The Education Department declined a grant for a new library cabinet in a letter which was read by the secretary of the Christchurch secondary schools boards, Mr P. J. Halligan, at the monthly meeting of the Mairehau High School board of governors yesterday afternoon. The same letter approved a grant of £l7 16s 3d for a new isolating transformer for the woodwork room. Board members were slow to react to their mixed fortune. The headmaster, Mr A. B. Ryan, was the first to be enlightened. “I think you must have the wrong school, sir.” Cool Day Although no frost was recorded in the city, the weather in Christchurch yesterday was cold. There was light fog in the early morning, and the wind was moderate north-easterly. A threedegree frost was recorded at Harewood. The temperature at Harewood at 9 a.m. was 37 degrees, rising to 50 degrees at noon, and 53 degrees at 3 p.m. At the Botanic Gardens the tern erature at 3 p.m. was also 53 degrees. The Government Life building’s temperature gauge recorded 54 degrees at 4.15 p.m.
