Concord Costs Alarm

(N Z.P.A -Reuter—Copy right) LONDON, July 26. A British Parliamentary committee today expressed concern over the mounting costs of the Concord supersonic airliner project and called for an independent probe into the sharing of its costs between Britain and France.

The Committee of Public : Accounts—an all-party organI isation of the House of ComI mons—reported that they 'doubted estimates of develop(tnent costs which had soared i from an original figure of between £75 million and £B5 million to the current figure of £275 million. Costs of the Concord have risen progressively since Britain and France first agreed to develop the supersonic airliner three years ago. Britain’s Government threatened to cancel the project within a week of gaining power last October because of the nation’s deepening bal-ance-of-nayments crisis. But the Government reluctantly gave the go-ahead last ‘January after it became apparent that Britain would legally be bound to pay for

costs already expended on the project. The first of the Concord prototypes is due to fly in February, 1968.
