NEW N.S.W. DRIVERS
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) SYDNEY, July 21. A speed limit of 40 miles an hour for new drivers will be introduced in New South Wales under a new road safety programme announced today. Amended traffic regulations are expected to be in force in about a week. The programme, announced by the premier, Mr Robin Askin, is aimed at reducing the State’s road toll. Regulations will provide that holders of existing licences guilty of serious offences can be issued with provisional licences and placed under the same restrictions as those imposed on beginners.
The N.S.W. Cabinet also decided to tighten up the law for the inspection of defective motor vehicles on and off public streets, and impose speed limits on sections of main highways.
