AUSTRALIAN BOOM

(Special Crspdt. N.ZP.A.) SYDNEY, July 23. While the rest of Australia is booming, with population increasing steadily, the island state of Tasmania is losing ground, according to figures published recently. The Commonwealth Statistician says Tasmania’s population dropped by 5792 in the first three months of this year.

At June 30 last year, Tasmania’s population was estimated at 364,566. Since then it has been announced in Canberra that Australia had a near-record number of migrants in the year to June 30. During the year 140,157 new settlers arrived, 18.000 more than in the previous year and 39,000 more than in 1962-63.
