One Candidate In Portugal Election

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copt/rtgM I LISBON, July 22. Portugal will hold a presidential election next Sunday, with only one candidate and almost no doubt of a further seven-year term for the present administration.

The candidate is 70-year-old Admiral Americo Tomas, who has been President of Portugal since 1958. He is the candidate of the Uniao Nacional (National Unity Party), which supports the regime of Dr. Antonio Salazar, the Prime Minister since 1932. All opposition groups will boycott the election. The leading opposition movement,- Accao DemocratoSocial, announced a few days ago that it would not present a candidate because the new

system of indirect suffrage “excludes any possible representation of the opposition.” Until now the President has been elected by direct suffrage, but this year a 575member Electoral College will name him. It is the President’s duty to appoint a prime minister who. in turn, names his cabinet. No-one doubts that Admiral Tomas will reappoint Dr. Salazar to run the nation, as presidents have done for more than 30 years.
