Thirty-six refugees have been shot dead by East German border guards since the Berlin Wall was built in August, 1961. a West Berlin Government spokesman said yesterday. Another 16 drowned while trying to swim to West Berlin across rivers and lakes, or died when trying to jump from houses near the border, bringing the number of victims at the wall to 52. East German border guards opened fire at refugees in 940 separate incidents, and West Berlin police fired back 13 times to protect refugees. A total of 3479 East Germans fled to West Berlin. They included 432 border guards in uniform.
