47 Skiers Bid For Titles
The major events of the Canterbury ski-ing j season will begin this week-end when the pro- j vincial individual championships are held at Broken River. Forty-seven skiers, 34 men and 13 women, from Nelson and Canterbury, have entered the championship, while the Broken River giant slalom will be held tomorrow afternoon.
Each section has been divided into three groups of seedings and, judging by the calibre of some of the skiers who have not been thought good enough to make the top ranking in both men’s and women’s events, the standard should be high. One feature of the championships will be: the number of former McKenzie scholars entered. P. and J. Thornton (C.V.S.C.), two of Canterbury’s most prominent skiers, J. Nurse, the present University champion, D. Stewart, the 1964 junior champion, and RPoulson, the runner-up, have all missed top ranking in the men’s section. Although none of these is likely to gain a placing in either slalom or downhill, they are all proficient skiers. In the women’s events, Mrs
H. Baudinet and Miss R. Arndt, the two German sisters, have been denied top ranking because insufficient is known about their form. As both have achieved success in Germany, they are quite cap-! able of upsetting the top I seeds. Miss V. Christie, the present University champion, is another to miss top ranking. Top ranking, in running order, are:— Men.— G. McFadden (C.V.S.C.), W. Wolmersley (N.C.S.C.), M. Gardiner (Amuri), N. Addison (Nelson), M. Dennis (C.W.S.C.). G. Nevell (C.W.S.C.), P. Willis (C.W.S.C.), R. Wolmersley (N.C. S.C.), M. Corner (C.W.S.C.), R. CuXen (C.V.S.C.). J. Willis (C.W.S.C.).
Women.— R. WiOlis (C.W.S.C.), J. Matthews (C.W.S.C.), P. Shiel (Lincoln), C. Lowrey, K. Guy (N.C.S.C.), V. Oddie (Tas man).
