NEW YOUTH HOSTEL
House Leased In Richmond
The North Canterbury branch of the Youth Hostels’ Association, had leased from the Christchurch City Council for use as a youth hostel the former Flesher residence in Avebury Park reserve, off Evelyn Couzins avenue, the branch secretary (Mr C. H. Shaw) said last night. The lease was for five years, with a right of renewal. Mr Shaw said the residence could be converted into a 28-bed hostel, but before it could be opened some work was necessary. This included; the construction of an ablution and toilet block, extension of the kitchen, and installation of stoves and other equipment. Also the roof had to be repaired, the exterior painted, a fire-alarm and firefighting systems installed, and the whole house furnished. The cost was expected to be at least £3500.
On Saturday branch members would take to the new hostel equipment already acquired, and it was planned to hold an open day so that the premises could be inspected. Tentatively the opening of the hostel was planned for early summer, but that depended on how quickly the branch could arranr? for a contractor to build the ablutions block and how long he would need to do the job, Mr Shaw said.
