HARMONIC SOCIETY

Anonymous Gift Made The Christchurch Harmonic Society received £lOO yesterday towards its overseas tour fund. This was the largest anonymous donation the choir has received and brought the amount still to be raised between now and September 1 to £7OOO. According to the chairman of the society (Mr C. C. Smith) the donation, handed to Sir James Hay, was a surprise . He said the recent “Sing a Song of Air Fare” appeal by Mr Malcolm Anderson had received a good response. The sum of £1350 was raised and it was still possible the total might reach £l5OO. Mr Smith said active fundraising activities by the choir members ended with the recent street appeal. From now on the choir would be engaged in raising its musical standards in preparation to represent New Zealand at the first Commonwealth Arts Festival.
