Judge Archer To Lead Commission

(New Zealand Press Association)

WELLINGTON, July 14.

Judge K. G. Archer has been named chair, man of the Transport Commission to inquire into ports and related transport. Other members of the committee announced today in a joint statement by the Minister of Transport (Mr McAlpine) and the Minister of Labour (Mr Shand) are Messrs W. P. R. Day and J. T. Gilkinson.

Provision would be made for appointment to the commission of one or two further members at a later date if this was desired, the ministerial statement said.

Judge Archer has had a long association with transport and was well acquainted with many of the problems facing the transport industry. Mr Day is a prominent businessman and Mr Gilkinson recently retired as Commissioner of Works. “The commission will begin its work immediately and already the Transport Department, which will service the commission, has started to gather information and statistics on its behalf,” Mr McAlpine said. The commission has been set up to inquire primarily into transport of goods to, from and through New Zealand ports as a means of increasing transport efficiency, particularly in the moving and handling of this country’s export produce, Mr Shand said. Both Ministers said an increase in transport efficiency and goods handling techniques could play an important role in ensuring for New Zealand the retention of over-

seas markets for its produce and the enhancement of the value of new markets.

The inquiry would be New Zealand-wide, and to allow a full and completely thorough investigation, the commission was expected to continue its inquiries for three years.

The commission would report to the Government periodically.
