Bastille Day Celebrated
The National Day of France (July 14) which commemorates the storming of the Bastille in 1789, was celebrated last evening by the Alliance Francaise, at the Horticultural Hall. About 400 members and their friends sang “The Marseillaise,” the French national hymn, and members of the French Club of the University of Canterbury led a lantern procession through the hall. The programme of entertainment was arranged by members of the student club and the alliance and included sketches, burlesques, musical items and community singing of French folk songs. Guests were received by Madame G. Blonde! and were officially welcomed by the president (Mr G. Candy) and the secretary (Mr A. E. J. Arts). Proceeds from the celebration will go to the Save the Children Fund.
