LOTTERY DISPUTE
i Powers Of Govt. (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 14. If the parties in the dispute ever the Golden Kiwi lotteries could not reach an agreement, there was adequate power under present legislation to take any action deemed necessary, said the Minister of Finance (Mr Lake) in Parliament today. Mr Lake was replying on behalf of the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr Seath) to a question from Dr. Finlay (Opp., Waitakere). Dr. Finlay asked if the Government would hold a public inquiry into the running of the lotteries if complete agreement was not reached at tomorrow’s meeting betwen the Retail Tobacconists and Hairdressers' Association and Hammond and McArthur, Ltd., the organisers of the lotteries. Mr Lake said under section 5 of the Gaming Act the Government could, among other things, revoke the appointment of the organisers.
In reply to a supplementary question from Dr. Finlay, Mr Lake said there appeared to be widespread dissatisfaction over the running of the lotteries, but “I have learned there are always two sides to every question."
