Alcoholism
Sir,—Mr H. W. Hollingsworth serves us well by highlighting the logic of the disease concept of compulsive drinking. If the cause of the disease is known, why not eliminate the disease by removing the cause? “Why in the name of reason should alcoholism be permitted to continue under Government protection?” he asks. It is a fair question in so far as our community life is governed by reason. But alas, we New Zealanders, Government and individuals, are illogical in some matters of public health. The economics of alcohol trading become a more powerful factor than a people’s health. We are more concerned with motley than logic. Which prompts me to gratitude that no-one in our favoured land has a vested interest in typhoid, polio, or tuberculosis.— Yours, etc., PHILLIP RAMSAY. July 14, 1965.
