Many Bogged On Bad Roads

About 30 competitors from most Canterbury car clubs took part in an inter-club rally organised by the University Motor Club yesterday It was the second-last event in this year’s series for the Lupp Cup. which is awarded to the club whose teams of three cars have gained most points during the year. The rally lasted nearly seven hours and had three sections. The first was excellent but the second two took the field over atrocious roads. The last section was routed mostly through tracks in the Waimakariri river-bed area Many cars suffered damage and competitors considered the section appallingly rough. It was probably the roughest inter-club event held in Canterbury and car owners expressed displeasure at the conditions. Many cars became bogged in fords or on rough tracks and had to be manhandled on to firm ground.

The first section was difficult, had several navigational traps and was an excellent example of first-class rally organising. It passed through the Christchurch, Lincoln. Rolleston and Aylesbury areas, ending at Kimberley. Many crews went off course in this first section. The second section, in the Sheffield-Greendale-Darfield areas, involved map-reading. However, the instructions were not very clear and some sections of the route were very rough. Results have not yet been announced.
