LATE TRY WINS

N. Brighton Too Casual

NEW BRIGHTON 12: D. Beards ley, J. Noonan and R. Bodger tries, G. Stanley a penalty goal. UNIVERSITY B 11: F. Sevele ’ try. P.. Gaffikln two penaltygoals and a conversion.

New Brighton would have been extremely unlucky to lose a scrappy but generally entertaining match, but jt took a good try on 'the-' stroke of ■ time to give them a one-point advantage over University B. NO quarter -was asked or given in a match which New Brighton, took too casually, for most of its length. B. Crisp, the .University left winger;.was ordered from the field after a series of misdemeanors and a number of furtive punches were made by members of both sides.

In spite of this, the game had much to commend it. Both sets of backs ran strongly against some good defence and if New Brighton's pack dominated the loose play. University B gained an ascendency in the line-outs. R. Bowick, the New Brighton coach, played an outstanding game at full-back with some splendid line-kicks. Apart from E. March, the New Brighton backs all played well and showed plenty of penetration later in the game. If Stanley had an off-day with his goal kicking, missing several reasonable attemuts, he marshalled his line well.

The University backs wtere equally impressive but the bjad handling of F. Sevele upset a number of promising moves. G Nottage was elusive and R, Sommerville initiated a number of moves. N. O'Brien was, starved on the wing but did well with limited opportunities. A. Bowes and C. Hockley were the most prominent University forwards but the whole pack did well to hold New Brighton up front. Gaffikin’s kicking and jumping almost gave University (he match. There were few stars in a New Brighton paek which played below its usual standard. I. Penrose and E. Leask .were very quick to the loose ball and M. Duke worked hard.

New Brighton, like other teams earlier this season, won, but almost paid the penalty for taking this somewhat nondescript-looking University B side too lightly. Referee: Mr L. S. Hunk
