No Room In The Cells
(New Zealand Prest Aeeoclatlon)
DUNEDIN, July 4.
Accommodation became a problem at the Dunedin central police station during the week-end—busi-ness was so brisk that the station ran out of cells.
The station has 10 cells, each with two bunks. But by Saturday afternoon, the police had taken 22 men into custody and the gaoler was scratching his head over where to put them all. At one stage, the total
was 23, but one prisoner
was released on ball. The remaining 22 could not be bailed out because of the nature of the charges facing them—mostly offences such as burglary and receiving. Eventually the shortage of sleeping space was solved by providing shakedowns. The police, unable to recall any previous weekend so busy, were last night hoping the run of crime would end before they ran out of bedding.
