Sniper Wounds Tourists

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) HONOLULU, July 3. A sniper surrendered to police tonight after wounding five persons and killing a policeman who was pursuing him through the night in the rugged Koolau mountains. One of the wounded tourists was in critical condition, at a hospital. Fellow officers were unable to reach the wounded

police officers and their condition could not be determined.

Police armed with rifles, tear-gas and night field glasses stalked the gunman through the rugged, densely-forested Koolau mountains. Officers said two busloads of tourists had stopped at the lookout near the top of the mountains separating windward Oahu from Honolulu and were preparing to get back aboard when the sniper opened fire. '

The sniper was released from the State menial hospital in Honolulu only two months ago after being confined for about five months for a sniper attack on another sight-seeing group. Police said they did not know why the sniper had been released from the mental hospital, or when. They said no-one had been seriously wounded in the earlier sniping incident, but gave no other details immedi'ately.
