PACIFIC TALKS
European Back Seat
(N Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) PORT MORESBY, July 4. European officials are expected to take a “back seat" at the two-week South Pacific Conference, which opens in Lae on Tuesday. Officials of the South Pacific Commission said that this reflected the emphasis being placed on giving representatives of the 3m Pacific islanders a greater say in the work of the commission. The commission was formed after the World War II as an international effort to raise the standard of living in the islands and to provide opportunities for social development among their people. A total of about 130 delegates will attend this, the sixth South Pacific Conference.
Those from 15 Pacific territories will be joined by representatives of Australia. Britain, France, the United States, New Zested, Tonga and Western Samoa.
