Good Trentham Trial By Cretan Expected

“The Press" Special Service

WELLINGTON.

Cretan’s final race trial for the Wellington Steeplechase will be today on the second day of the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club’s winter meeting at Hastings and his showing should determine Wellington favouritism.

It was earlier intended to start Cretan in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, but he will now contest the Hastings Steeplechase for which he is favourite.

In two starts over country at Hastings Cretan has been first and second. His first came a year ago in the Kennels Hack Steeplechase, and his second was last week when he partnered Yeti over the final round to give us such an exciting spectacle for the Hawke's Bay Steeplechase. Though he was fit and forward last week, Cretan gave an impression that he would improve. The heavy track this week Will not worry him, and the field is not as strong as it was on the first day. His owner-trainer, Mr N. Grafas, had planned to start Cretan in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, but after discussions with the jockey, J. H. Hely, it was decided to keep Cretan to steeplechases. Copper Fair The other feature jumping race is the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles in which Copper Fair, also to be ridden by Hely, is the probable winner. Copper Fair distanced the hack hurdlers at Te Rapa, and at his only start since was a good fifth in the Manawatu Jumpers’ Flat. The winner was Chesterman, from the Ropiha stable. Chesterman again meets Copper Fair in the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles, and should make it hard for him. Chesterman’s flat win was achieved in good style because he lost ground when a horse broke down in front of him. To Reign ran a useful race in the Jumpers’ Flat, finishing on for sixth, and he was again prominent for most of the Winter Handicap last week. Stablemates The stablemates. Action Packed and Equality, remain in favour for the T.A.B. double, the races being the Te Mata Handi-

cap, which Action Packed has won twice already, and the Longlands Handicap. Action Packed will find it harder to win this week than he did last year, but he should still get there. There is little difference in the quality of the second leg from last week, except for David Jeff, which was twice second to Master Defence at Egmont. Master Defence carried on for a hollow win al Pukekohe on Wednesday.

Action Packed’s main danger is expected to be My Contact. Last week My Contact raced like an early improver in the Winter Handicap, and he has fulfilled some of that promise by two first class trials this week. There has been rain during the week, and the track is heavy.
