PAPERBACKS

B. R. Nanda’s MAHATMA GANDHI, an important biography of the great Indian leader, first published in 1958, has been revised and reissued

in a paper-back abridgement by Unwin Books. Few men in their lifetime aroused stronger emotions or touched deeper chords of humanity than Gandhi. Mr Nanda’s work is both a chronological account of Gandhi’s life and an analysis of bis role in Indian nationalism. It has remained one of the best accounts' of the man about whom Albert Einstein wrote: “Generations to come will scarcely believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth."

When Professor Tawney’s EQUALITY —his great argument of the social and moral case for equality—first appeared in 1931 immediately it drew a series of angry attacks and equally vigorous defences. Now the heat it generated has passed,—with the grim years of the Great Depression in which Tawney wrote, —but the author’s central contention, “that what matters to the health of society is the objective towards which its face is set,” remains equally true today. The growth of the Welfare State, with its apparent veneer of equality, has only heightened the need to consider the uniqueness of individuals, something in which Tawney passionately believed. Tawney himself substantially revised the book in 1952. This paperback edition in the Unwin Books series has an extended introductory essay by Professor R. M. Titmuss bringing the story up to 1964.

A book published last year by Pelham Books as “Improve Your Winemaking” has been issued as a Pen paperback under the title, “The Pan Book of Winemaking.” A useful little book contains a wealth of information about ingredients, implements, preparations and methods. There are photographs of necessary equipment, and some 40 pages of recipes which include among the well-known items such unusual-sounding numbers as “Birch Sap Wine,” "Bramble Tip Wine,” Pea Pod Wine”—and the greatly appealing “Strong Wine or Poor Man’s Brandy.” •
