Catchment Levies Against Farmers
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, July 2.
No strong case had yet been made for investigating “on cost” charges levied by catchment authorities against farmers and runholders, the Minister of Works (Mr Allen) said in Parliament today.
Mr N. E. Kirk (Opp., Lyttelton) had asked the Minister if he was prepared to investigate the injustice of the “on cost" charges levied against farmers and runholders who participated in farm and run improvement plans, with a view to establishing a more uniform and reasonable basis of charge.
Mr Allen said the Catchment Authorities’ Association was not altogether happy with
legislation governing the matter. A strong case, however, would have to be presented in detail on any disadvantage, and such a case had not been made. After discussing the matter, the association had decided to leave it in abeyance, pending other legislation later.
