(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, July 2. Owners of some cash registers, adding machines and accounting machines might not receive financial assistance in the 1967 change-over to decimal currency although they were eligible for this assistance, the Parliamentary Undersecretary to the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) said tonight.
“The Government wants to help but cannot if a machine is not registered. If we don’t know of a machine, parts cannot be ordered for it “Office machine registration —one of the really big steps in the change-over—has to be arranged so far ahead to aid planning of the complex tasks
of ordering millions of parts, assessing costs and then actually converting machines. “Even the smallest shop has a cash register and even the smallest business an adding machine. Recording business transactions is highly mechanised.
“Planning now ensures that all these machines can operate in decimals as soon as possible after D.C. Day so that the change takes places smoothly and with the least disruption to normal business activity,” Mr Muldobn said. An extensive advertising campaign was being carried out to direct the attention of every owner of eligible machines to the need to register promptly. Registration forms were being sent to all of whom records were available. Any owner of an apparently eligible machine not receiving a form by July 15 should write to the Decimal Currency Board.
“A chart setting out qualifying ages, in easily read fash-
ion, is being widely published,” Mr Muldoon said. Machines not eligible for Government aid did not have to be registered. “There are many other types of monetary machines needing conversion, including taxi meters, postal franking machines and price computing scales. Their conversion is now being considered by the Decimal Currency Board, and they do not have to be registered yet,” Mr Muldoon said “The three main office machines are being tackled first, because they are the greatest number affected by the change,” he said.
