SHORTAGE OF STAFF

Patent Office Work Behind <Parliamen(ar« Reporter) WELLINGTON, July 2. A shortage of staff in the Patents Division of the Justice Department has led to a “grave arrears” of work, particularly in the field of industrial chemistry. The annual report of the department says it is to be deplored that there is insufficient staff for the work offering. Although national laws may differ, says the report, throughout the world a thorough scientific novelty search is the heart of any patent examination system. “So vast is the store of scientific and technical information now available, however, that adequate searches are becoming increasingly difficult by using conventional methods.” The report adds that, as a result, the department is closely watching developments in computer and mechanised searching and processing overseas.
