Resigns Because Pupils Coloured

BIRMINGHAM, July 2.
A teacher in a Birmingham secondary school has resigned because half the pupils are coloured.
Mr Owen Davis, aged 47, claimed that white children among the 440 pupils at the school were having their education jeopardised. “1 have no colour prejudice, but 1 do think there should be temporary segregation to overcome language difficulties before integration,” he said Mr Davis, who intends to migrate to South Africa at the end of the present term, said: "The pace in the school has
slowed to the extent where white children leaving at age 16 have only reached a 14-year-old stage.” His resignation plan brought a sharp reaction from his 18 colleagues. In a letter to the Birmingham Education Department they said that coloured pupils who had difficulty with their English often had a higher I Q than many whites. After being taught English by specialists, they joined a racially-mixed class. The teachers said English children were not iheld back but spurred on by their coloured classmates.
