WALNUT (California), June 21.
Neville Scott, of New Zealand, won the three-mile event in the Southern Pacific A.A.U. track meeting today, but it was a tortuous affair as he developed a badly strained Achilles tendon.
The game New Zealander was timed in 13min 57.45ec and held on courageously to stave off two marines, Robert Drouillet and Thomas Bae he. jun., who finished in 14:00.8 and 14:04.0.
At the conclusion of the race Scott stepped off the track at the Mt. San Antonio College Stadium, slumped to the grass and a doctor hur-
ried over to massage his swelling right leg. Scott said it had been hurting for two weeks. Asked why he did not drop out, he said: “I just don’t like to stop in a race." The trouble started on the third lap. Nearing the twomile mark it was obvious that he was in distress. Twice he grabbed his right thigh with a hand, hoping to shake the cramp loose. Scott opened up a lead of 60 yards after two laps and at one mile was about 100 ■ yards in front. Then his pace I slackened considerably and | his seven rivals, at that stage I closely bunched, began to I close the distance. As the two Marines approached closer Scott managed to put on a good sprint in the final 100 yards and win by 25 yards.
