ATHLETIC TRACK

City Council Approval

An all-weather track with eight lanes of the type recommended by the Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was approved by the City Council last evening for Queen Elizabeth II Park. The City Engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular), who recently inspected the all-weather track in Dunedin, said officials and athletes there were apparently happy with it, although there had been some reservations earlier. Strict control of a track was necessary, with routine training being kept to the outer lanes, he said. The reserves committee estimated the cost at £16,710 initially and a total cost after three years of £lB,OOO.
