RECREATION SCHEME

Avonside G.H.S. Proposal

A comprehensive report on a proposed new recreation programme for pupils at the Avonside Girls’ High School was presented at a meeting of the school’s board of governors by the principal (Miss P. Stevenson) yesterday. The board is to consider the report and give its decision next month. The report was compiled by the school’s physical education department under Miss P. Keen. Miss Stevenson said there was concern that only one girl in five could take part in interschool games, while membership of certain school clubs was also limited. The new plans would allow every girl to participate in some sport. It was estimated that more than 500 girls did not take part in any sport outside the ohysical education lessons. The new programme would provide 1200 playing spaces during the week's lunch hours. In addition girls who for medical reasons cannot take part in vigorous games would also be able to participate. It is proposed to introduce golf for the sixth form, pad'lertennis, newcombe, volleyball, horseshoes, squash, for upper-sixth pupils, and tenniluoits. Miss Stevenson said the estimated initial cost would be about £137, and the annual cost about £53.
