Riccarton Hacks Win
Cumberland and Filspar recorded well-earned wins for Riccarton stables in hack races at Oamaru on Saturday.
Cumberland was the best of the hack stayers in the Waikaura Hack Handicap, and Filspar justified eachway favouritism with a comfortable win in the Farewell Hack Handicap.
Cumberland’s win was his first in 22 starts this season, but it was widely expected after a good third at Waimate at his previous start. This was also his first win for Christchurch owner Mr N. A. Syme, since he joined A. J. Williams’s stable a few weeks ago. It compensated for an unlucky second by Pee Wee, another member of the team, in the Trial Stakes won by Donnaway earlier in the day. Filspar, a small, nippy Coral Arc gelding trained by C. McDonald for Mr J. C. McCarthy, ran alongside Trovatella in the lead to the straight in the Farewell Hack Handicap, then scurried away
to win unchallenged by a length and three quarters Scent, Filspar's most solid-ly-backed rival, improved a string of minor placing* with a second by a comfortable margin over the others. Melhar and Bushido could not be separated for fourth.
