Good Double For Stable
Windsor Castle and Bandashar brought off a good double for their Waimate owners, Mr and Mrs A. G. Wigley, and L. H. Pratt’s Orari stable in the jumping races at the Oamaru winter meeting on Saturday.
Windsor Castle’s strong gallop and swift, clean jumping gave him a successful cross-country debut in the Burnside Hack and Hunters’ Steeplechase. Bandashare won the Hack Hurdles.
Windsor Castle had won over hurdles, but he had only one schooling run over fences before his race on Saturday. "He jumped the fences at Washdyke so well when he was schooled there a few weeks ago that I wouldn’t take the risk of trying him again,” Pratt said on Saturday.
Pratt said he had never seen a horse school better than Windsor Castle did. "Perhaps Peak Halyard’s influence has got something to do with that jumping ability.” Pratt said. Boom, the dam of Windsor Castle, is a half-sister by Peak Halvard to the brilliant galloper. The Unicorn. The best of Windsor Castle's rivals on Saturday was William David, another without previous racing experience over country. William David did not jump as well as the winner, but he was the only one to find the pace to
make a challenge In the last half mile. He finished nine lengths clear of Knight, and Race Card made it an all-Canterbury finish with a fourth. The race had its eventful moments, and most of them came early. The Frenchman and The Slug lost their riders at the first fence, and Ore ran off at the second fence. Ore is a member of R. J. Cochrane’s team, which raced without luck on Saturday. Unlucky
Granton, another member of the Cochrane team, appeared to have the hurdles as good as won after leading over the second
last hurdle, but a fetlock joint gave way near the home turn, Though so badly crippled, Granton defied efforts to pull him up until after he jumped the last hurdle and passed the post in fourth place. Bandashar took a short lead when Granton’s lead gave out, then survived a challenge from Grand Prix for a win at doublefigure odds. Bandashar was the winner of the first leg of the course double. Lyndabelle won the second leg, the Awamoa Hack Handicap, with a brilliant late rails challenge. She nosed out the Riccarton filly, Status Symbol, and rounded off a double worth £283 9s for £l.
The Bandashar-Lyndabelle combination carried 18 5s tickets.
