BEATLES’ M.B.E.

They Deserved It’ (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright I MELBOURNE. June 20. The retiring British High Commissioner to Australia (Sir William Oliver) defended the awards of the M.B.E to the Beatles. He said he owned some of their records and two Beatle wigs. Sir William Oliver, in Me’bcurne on a farewell visit after a term of five years and a half in Australia, said: “1 think really we live in a modern age and it is dangerous for anybody to throw the first stone.

“What are awards given for?—For doing something for your country. “I think the million pounds worth of dollars the Beatles have earned is quite a good show. They are a hard-work-ing, tough group, and I for one think they deserved it.” Sir William Oliver was honoured last week with the 0.8. E. in the same honours list as the Beatles.
