STRONG BACKS

Brighton Succeeds NEW BRIGHTON 21: J. Noonan a try, C. Smith a dropped goal: G. Stanley two penalty goals. ALBION 6: A. Harrison, two penalty goals. The game was full of movement and both sets of backs ran strongly. The Albion forwards had the better of the set play, but were shaded by the New Brighton pack in the loose. Stanley, the New Brighton half-back, gave more consistent and longer passes than his Albion opposite, W. Flewellyn, and New Brighton had a slight edge in the inside backs. " D. Beardsley, the New Brighton second five-eighths, was the most penetrative back on the field; his acceleration and hard running led to New Brighton’s try. Inside him. Smith dropkicked a good goal from 40 yards. R. Rowlatt and P. Sands won a lot of ball for Albion in the line-outs and D. Swann took three tight heads. However, Albion lost the game through offside play during the two set scrums, right in front of its posts. The Albion line only looked a threat, when Harrison, the fullback, came into it; J. R. Adams (second five-eighths) made three breaks but lost his supports on each occasion. New Brighton was awarded 13 penalties and Albion 12—mostly for off-side play in scrums and line-outs. Referee: Mr H. P. Kearney.
