Aiding The Farmer

Sir, —In the Address-in-Reply debate I was interested in the speech on farming by Mr Rowling (Labour’s “shadow” Minister of Agriculture or Finance?) He criticised the Government for not doing more for the farmer, but seemed to forget that his own party has consistently opposed the Government’s policy toward the farmer, saying that it is aid where it is least needed. The last Labour Government, while promisipg a new deal for farmers before its election, quickly moved in the opposite direction after election. The 11 per cent cut in the guaranteed price and increased taxes and costs hit hardest the small farmer, such as those in Mr Rowling’s electorate. Mr Rowling concluded with the contention that the farmers are fed up. Yes, fed up with Labour’s usual pre-election promises and post-election lack of performance.—Yours, etc..
