APHIDES STILL FLYING IN SOME DISTRICTS
“Aphis flights are continuing in Marlborough, North and Mid-Canter-bury,’’ says the fourth report issued by the cereal virus warning service, “but no aphides have been trapped in South Canteroury and North Otago.”
The following are numbers of aphides recorded from a week’s trapping during the last week of May: Blenheim 4, Seddon 2, Balcairn 8, Fernside 1, Annat 2, Lincoln 1, South bridge 3, Barrhill 8, Greenstreet 2, Pleasant Point 0, Milford 0, Morven 0, and Bortons 0.
“In all areas, except South Canterbury and North Otago, wheat crops that have emerged by the end of May are likely to be infested with cereal aphides and virus. All infested crops should be sprayed during the July to mid-September period. “In South Canterbury and North Otago wheat crops which emerged before May 20 are likely to have been infested with cereal aphides and will require spraying.
“The next report will be issued when aphis flights have ceased.”
