USING NEW MICROSCOPE.—Miss F. J. Wilson, who is studying the relationships of the pea leaf roll virus and aphides which carry the disease, is shown inspecting sections of the stems of virusinfected pea plants with a new microscope at the Lincoln sub-station of the Plant Diseases Division of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research. The microscope, which magnifies up to 1600 diameters, costs about £800 and is part of the equipment for a new electron microscope unit. It has light attachments to enable fluorescent materials to be observed.
