Licence Labels To Be Issued

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 3. Licence labels would be issued to all motor-vehicle owners when they licensed their vehicles this year, announced the Transport Department today. The department said licence labels were not issued for cars during the last licensing year as the permanent number plate served as the annual licence.

“In future, all licensed vehicles will have annual licence labels,” said the statement. In the case of vehicles with windscreens, the label is to be attached either to the top or bottom centre of the windscreen. For vhicles without windscreens except tractors, trailers, power-cycles and motor-cycles—the licence label is to be fixed on the front or back or right-hand side of the vehicle.

Tractors are being issued with one registration plate only—to be fitted at the rear. Mr J. B. Darnell, DirectorGeneral of the Post Office and Registrar of Motor Vehicles, said today that he regretted any impression that might have been given that there would be no relicensing of motor-vehicles by post, or that it would not be welcome this year. This is certainly not the case, said Mr Darnell. His officers would be only too pleased to deal with licensing business by post. Completed forms could be sent to any post office, and the plates or labels would go by return post. Blank forms, too, would be sent to any address on request. The only problem, said Mr Darnell, was that plates were a little heavy, but this year would be the last when plates would be issued in any quantity so this difficulty would not arise again. He said he would be very happy if relicensing by post was stepped up quite a lot in future years. Mr Darnell also said he hoped the public now knew that relicensing had been extended to most post offices. With this greater coverage a better and quicker service could be given, and there would not now be the same pressure on post office staff at the main registration offices.
