Grant Impressive Over The Fences

“The Press” Special Service DUNEDIN. Grant, No Offence and Hy were the most impressive jumpers at Wingatui yesterday in a solid school over six fences on the steeplechase course.

Grant (C. S. Jones) was last away, but moved up to be in the bunch after the second fence where Jolly Fox M. Landrebe) was a clear leader. The five runners were almost in line going into the board fence near the halfmile where The Slug (M. Parr) fell and Grant lost a couple of lengths when they collided in midair. Grant finished on best by a length from Hy (L. Tree), with No Offence (A. Allan) close up and clear of., the weakening Jolly Fox. The Slug was remounted to complete the course and for good measure did the sod wall again. No Offence would have been better suited by another round as he appeared to be just warming up when the school was over. Grant relished the going and drew attention to his prospects in the Otago Steeplechase. Likely Improver Hy has been working well and looks a likely improver for the Tahuna Hack Steeples. The heavy ground did not suit The Slug. After the school, the trainer, H. A. Anderton, said that The Slug was an unlikely starter in the Tahuna Hack Steeplechase. McGregor (M. Parr) jumped in company with Startler (L. Tree) over two flights of hurdles. Startler continued the round on his own and showed promise for his limited experience. Debater (T. Powell) and Glenmorven (J. R. Dowling) both worked well over five furlongs on the plough in Imin ssec, the last three furlongs in 39sec. Debater's latest form is in open company, but he returns to intermediate class in the St. Clair Mile. Hot Foot (T. Powell) and

Alexandra (J. R. Dowling) were together over the same round in Imin 6sec, the last three furlongs in 39sec. Alexandra has drawn wide in the Brighton Improvers’ and may be reserved for a later day of the meeting. Golden Blossom (R. Pledger) worked well over half a mile in 52 3-ssec, the opening furlong in 39sec. She is well forward to make a fresh start.
