Scrappy Game

LINWOOD 5: R. Eastmond scored a try, p. Jellyman kicked a conversion. SUBURBS 3: D. Thomas scored a try. Linw.ood beat Suburbs by ■ 5 points to 3 in a scrappy match at Sunnyside. Only in the final 15 minutes did the spectators have anything to enthuse over as Suburbs tried desperately to gain the decisive three points. Neither side deserved to win. but Linwood had superiority in the forwards, particularly in the battle for possession. N. Stokes, at first five-eighths used possession to advantage with many long raking kicks. The experienced Linwood pack played with greater purpose and skilfully employed the knock-back from the lineouts. A. Holland won a number of tight heads. K. Wyber stood out in the tight and G. Cron and R. Eastmond were lively in the loose.

The Linwood backs were disappointing. Handling errors were frequent and often movements broke down with a player tackled in possession. The Suburbs pack lacked fire and determination and failed io hunt for the ball. However, M. O Maliy did a lot of useful tidying up. The Suburbs backs received limited opportunities but did show some penetration and Thomas scored a good try in the corner after a snappy chain-passing movement. Referee: Mr R. H. Bull.
