Parliament’s Diary

In half an hour yesterday Parliament received notice of more motions that it can discuss in the estimated time allocated for that purpose this session.

Following the system of last session. Opposition and Government members rose alternately, giving notices of motions blaming and praising the Government. The subjects covered included free trade, nuclear disarmament, education, prices, savings, building, production, the national roads board and overseas trade. Last year there were 56 notices of motion. A total of eight days was taken for debating them. All those debated were “talked out” without a vote being taken- The others lapsed.

In its first business sitting, Parliament also received four petitions. The annual r'eports of the departments of External Affairs and Police, and of the Parliamentary Public Expenditure Committee, were tabled.
