GAS MAIN TO PORT

Use Of Tunnel

Approved

I A gas main through the tunnel to provide a Lyttelton supply was agreed to in principle by the ChristchurchLyttelton Road Tunnel Authority yesterday, provided there were sufficient safeguards. The general manager (Mr L. H. Wilson) was asked to investigate a possible rental and the effect on insurance. The chief inspector of explosives wrote saying that if a suitably-engineered line was laid the proposal could be regarded as reasonable.

The Ministry of Works also said that provision of a gas line within the main exhaust duct would be a feasible and safe proposition, provided it was designed to proper standards and was properly fabricated, installed, and maintained.
