FLOODLIGHT AGREEMENT

Bird Safety Measure

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright)

NEW YORK, May 24.

The management of the 102storey Empire State building yesterday renewed its annual agreement with the National Audubon Society to turn off floodlights on the top floors when weather conditions pose a threat to migrating birds. A staff biologist of the Audubon Society said the lighting was a hazard to birds on nights with low cloud levels, fog and rain. During these weather conditions confused birds have flown around the high-level lights until exhausted.
