A Greek soccer player who pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a referee was sentenced to seven days’ gaol at the suburban Box Hill Court today. Bill Tsoukalidis, aged 23, was also ordered to pay £AlB.6s costs. Mr Robert Randell told the Court he was referee on May 1 this year at a soccer match between Athena and Box Hill. “In the second half of the game I saw Tsoukalidis kick an opponent and I ordered him off the field,” he said. “He said, ‘do you mean me,’ and when I said yes he rushed at me and struck me above the eye and on the left temple with his closed fist.
“Other players pulled him off but he broke free and came at me again. He hit me several times on the back before other players and officials restrained him.”
