WRONG ATTACK

<N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) DA NANG (South Vietnam), May 25.

Four American jets today accidentally attacked a South Vietnamese military installation near the border with North Vietnam, a United States military spokesman announced.

First reports about the attack mentioned the possibility that the attacking planes were Communist MiGs. That theory was later discounted.

Five government soldiers were wounded in the attack. The four aircraft strafed a South Vietnamese engineer battalion outpost about four miles south of the border of North Vietnam.

The four planes, apparently on a mission against North Vietnam, flew over the demilitarised zone from the north and each made a strafing pass with 20mm cannon on the outpost. “We feel 99 per cent sure they were four American planes off course,” the United States spokesman said.

Asked whether there was any possibility the aircraft might have been captured and used by the enemy, the spokesman said, "In our opinion absolutely not.”
