I University of California j scientists have shown off a I new invention designed to | make life comfortable for I astronauts aboard space stations and on prolonged space ; flights. i The device is called an i algatron. It uses a mixture of algae. • water, bacteria and sunlight ; to provide a continuous sup- • ply of fresh air and water ■ inside a closed chamber. ' Dr. William Oswald, a sanitary engineer, and Dr. Clarence Goluek, a biologist, : explained that the algatron is ' much lighter than other sys- . terns doing the same job. It , only weighs about 10001 b a ■ man. j Previous systems have em- : ployed a double wall, with the i biological culture placed be- ■ tween the two walls. ; However, they said, the ! double wall system proved i too bulky, heavy, and inefficient.
