“Gigantic Bluff” On Milford Track
(New Zealand Press Association)
NELSON, May 7.
The Tourist Department had been conducting a gigantic bluff on the Milford track for years, Mr L. W. McCaskill, a member of the National Parks Board, told the Institute of Foresters’ conference in Nelson today.
“Nobody has at any time had any right to stop the public using the track. The Tourist Department, with its huts established there, was given rights to charge for their use when the National Parks Board took over. It has
never had the right to exclude the public, but people haven’t wakened up to that yet. “It wouldn’t even have the right to refuse anyone prepared to pay on the launch part of the trip, even if they had not paid for the remainder.
“A tramping club got round this anyway by climbing over the Dore Pass.
“But I am entirely opposed to the public being prevented from walking the Milford track on their own if they want to,” said Mr McCaskill. “They still have full right of access.”
